How a watch party works

Install the extension

Head to the Chrome Web Store and add Roll Together to your browser. It takes about ten seconds and there is nothing to configure after that.

Open Crunchyroll and start a room

Navigate to any anime episode on Crunchyroll. Click the Roll Together icon in your browser toolbar and hit 'Create Room'. You will get a short link to share.

Invite your friends

Paste the room link into your group chat, Discord server, or wherever your crew hangs out. Friends click the link, the extension syncs everyone up, and you watch together.

The original Roll Together extension was a small, beloved tool that let Crunchyroll users watch anime in sync with friends over the internet. It worked well for a few years, then Crunchyroll redesigned its video player and the extension quietly broke. A lot of people noticed. Discord servers and Reddit threads filled up with people asking if anyone had fixed it yet. Ward, the developer behind this version, was one of those people asking the same question.

After a few weeks of digging into the old codebase and the new Crunchyroll player structure, Ward rebuilt the extension from scratch using the original as a reference point. The first working version went up in 2023. It handled pause and play sync reliably, which was the main thing people needed. Seek sync came a little later, once the player's event hooks were better understood. The extension has been updated a handful of times since then to keep up with Crunchyroll's occasional player tweaks.

Questions

Does everyone in the watch party need to install Roll Together?

Yes, everyone who wants to be part of the synced session needs the extension installed in their Chrome browser. It only takes about ten seconds to install from the Chrome Web Store. Once it is in, they just click your room link and they are in.

Does Roll Together work on browsers other than Chrome?

Right now it is Chrome only. It may work on Chromium-based browsers like Edge or Brave, but those are not officially tested. Firefox is not supported. If Chrome is not your main browser, you can install it just for Crunchyroll watch parties.

Do my friends need a Crunchyroll subscription?

Roll Together syncs playback, but it does not bypass Crunchyroll's own access rules. If an episode requires a premium subscription, each viewer needs their own account with the right tier. Roll Together cannot share one subscription across multiple viewers.

Finally works again. Me and my friends used the original Roll Together for years and were lost when it broke. This version picked up right where it left off.
